Surfing in South America: Ecuador     Peru     Chile     Brazil

Surf spots Chile: Surf Atlas - Onlineboarding.com
I was once sworn to secrecy about a town in Chile that offered 15 world class left points within one hour's drive. It is not the town of Concepcion or Pichilemu that both offer long lefts such as Punta De Lobos. Let's just say keep driving south along a new highway.

Chile, along with these 15 points offers consistent swell in the 4-6 foot range. The Humboldt current is at its strongest here. What that means is great seafood, cold water and very strong rips. Forget about paddling back out at some of the left points.

In the north of Chile are some seriously heavy waves such as Colegio at the town of Iquique. Keep going towards the Peruvian border and the coast is littered with shallow reefs sure to break boards.

45 minutes from Santiago is the surfing meccas of Vina Del Mar and Valparaiso.

Best swell: any time of year there's swell Crowds: very mild, heavy at some spots in Summer

Best wind: unfortunately sw are most common, hang out for the morning easterlies Getting around: need a car
Accomodation: from $7 US pp Water temp: cold
Best Time of year: Autumn and Spring Day Air temp: warm in summer cold in winter
